Different types of CCTV systems offer different features and benefits, so doing research ahead of time can help you make a more informed decision about which security system is best for your home.

For example, some CCTVs are wired systems, using cables and wires to transmit videos from cameras to recording devices; however, these systems require more set up than wireless systems. On the other hand, choosing a wireless system will give you the flexibility to install cameras without having to run cables throughout your house. Cameras may also use single or dual-lens technology and may have infrared capabilities for nighttime visits from intruders.

When researching CCTV systems, consider factors such as camera placement options, range of view coverage, minimum applications required for image navigation (such as software), whether external or internal storage is necessary for video recordings and any associated costs with surveillance hardware and products. Understanding each of these aspects can provide you with peace of mind knowing that you have made an informed choice when selecting your CCTV system.

Choose a good location for the CCTV camera

To have the best view of your home surroundings and to ensure that your CCTV camera captures footage successfully, you must choose a good location for the camera. Make sure that it points directly into the area you want to observe. Additionally, selecting an optimal location is particularly important if you are using night vision cameras which require more light. Consider factors such as whether there are any walls blocking the view of your CCTV camera and how much light there is in the area to ensure you can get clear surveillance footage.

Calculate the number of cameras you need

Before installing a CCTV camera system for your home surveillance, you must accurately calculate the number of cameras that are necessary for complete coverage. This number will vary depending on the area being monitored and any external factors like trees, buildings, or tall fences that may obstruct the camera’s line of sight.

When calculating the number of cameras needed for a given area, consider both what will be monitored (hallways, main entrances and exits, windows, etc.) as well as any blind spots in between the areas you intend to monitor. You must also factor in other elements such as lighting to determine if night vision is necessary or if additional lighting should be installed.

The quality of footage is another important consideration when installing a CCTV camera system. For example, if maximum clarity is desired then you should opt for high quality cameras with higher resolution capabilities; however, these can be more expensive than lower resolution models.

It is important to know and plan ahead so that you are aware of which type and quantity of cameras you need before making your purchase. Additionally, it is advisable to install one or two additional cameras beyond the recommended amount so you have extra coverage in case one needs repairs or maintenance at some point. Lastly, providing separate power sources for each camera will ensure they continue functioning during a power outage.

Installation

Installing a CCTV system for home security is not as difficult as it may seem. With the right equipment, you can do it yourself or hire a professional to do the job for you. Installation of a CCTV system involves setting up the cameras, connecting them to a power supply, and connecting them to a recording device. Let’s take a look at how you can install a CCTV system at home.

Mount the cameras and connect them to the power source

After you’ve read the manual and determined the placement of each CCTV camera, it’s time to mount them. Each camera has a mounting bracket as part of its package that you can use to ensure they are securely fastened to your chosen location. Ensure that they are not easily removable and have an unobstructed view before proceeding.

You may need specialist tools to drill into walls and roofs if the cameras need to be mounted outside, so make sure you have those at hand before proceeding. After mounting the cameras, they must also be connected to a power source if they do not use batteries as their main power source.

Some cameras come with their own Power over Ethernet (PoE) adapter, which eliminates the need for linking them up directly with conventional cable wiring. Most PoE systems require a specialized charging hub in order for the cameras to receive power from your outdoor security system’s main unit hub or central control panel. Be sure that all cables and adapters used for this purpose are compatible with your chosen CCTV system before connecting them.

Connect the cameras to the recording device

Once you’ve placed your cameras, it’s time to connect them to the recorder. Most CCTV recording devices come with four input channels so that you can connect up to four cameras. Each channel should have its own cable for optimum performance. Depending on your device, these cables may be bundled in a single port or connected separately.

To ensure that your connection will remain close and secure, most CCTV recording devices require connections through BNC ports and RG59 coax cables. Generally speaking, it’s best to use the RG59 cable for longer distances as double shielded cables are more appropriate for extended runs of any kind. Your camera should also feature BNC connectors (or compatible connectors) where you can plug in the recording device or receiver at the other end of the run.

If you decided to choose an IP-based system, installation is slightly different as there are no physical connections involved with IP cameras – they simply get plugged into a power source and connected to your internet router with an Ethernet cord or Wi-Fi signal depending on the type of camera being used. However, they do still rely on a digital video recorder (DVR) or network video recorder (NVR) which must be installed correctly and configured properly to view and record footage remotely from any web enabled device such as a laptop or smartphone.

Connect the recording device to the monitor

Once the hard drives have been installed and powered up, it is time to connect the recording device to the monitor. Insert the male end of one of the included HDMI cables into the HDMI port on the back of the recording device. Plug in the other end of this cable into one of your provided monitors, typically via an HDMI input port.

Once connected, make sure that you can see what is captured by your cameras properly on this monitor. This should be a live feed, allowing you to adjust any camera angles as needed. If any camera angles need adjusting, simply adjust them with a flat-head screwdriver. Once all cameras are properly arranged and recorded correctly on your monitor, you can power down your recording device and prepare it for permanent mounting where preferred.

Post-Installation

Your CCTV system installation is now complete and you have a fully-functional security system in place. However, after installation, it is important to make sure that everything is working as it should be. This post-installation process involves testing the system, setting up notifications, and configuring all the settings to ensure the system functions correctly and provides maximum security. Let’s look at the post-installation process in detail.

Test the CCTV system

After the installation of your CCTV system is complete, it is important to take some time to test the system. This should involve performing physical tests (by moving around your monitored areas in the camera’s line of sight) and making sure that all video output is received on your television or computer monitor.

You should also conduct a remote test. If you have set up web access, you can now log into your web Interface from another location and review any footage stored there or access real-time video footage. You can also test whether automatic recordings are taking place as programmed and check if email alerts are being sent according to your set parameters. All alarms should also be tested manually to ensure they trigger when activated.

Finally, check that the power connections are secure and connected properly for uninterrupted recording and functioning of all cameras with the DVR for an extended operational span.

Set up motion detection

Once your closed-circuit television (CCTV) system is connected and powering on, you can configure motion detection settings to help ensure the security of your home. Motion detection can be beneficial for any type of premise surveillance for homeowners who want added security.

To set up a motion detection feature on your CCTV system, first consult the user manual for specific instructions from the manufacturer. Basic steps might involve: enabling motion-detection mode, choosing lenses, adjusting settings, focusing and calibrating the camera, setting playback mode and regulating sensitivity levels.

To activate motion detection on a camera lens, you’ll need to choose between two primary options – passive infrared (PIR) or video analytics. PIR detects temperature changes in the environment rather than identifying and discerning movement like video analytic systems do. This option is useful if you would like to be alerted when someone walks past a certain space but not necessarily when they stop or stand still in it. Video analytics are more precise but tend to be expensive and need proactive maintenance – they look at how objects interact with each other over time and alert you whenever irregularities occur within pre-defined parameters.

Motion alerts don’t need to be constant either – they can be customized depending on your needs by setting specific “trip wires” that alert when someone passes through certain areas. You should also think about what action should take place once an alert is triggered – many systems have instant message capabilities so relevant personnel can be notified as quickly as possible when any anomalies are detected. Once all settings have been adjusted accordingly you may test the system by introducing an intentional disruption such as walking within range of chosen sensors or activating sound recordings in predetermined locations.

Set up recording schedules

The ability to set up recording schedules is a great way to automate your home surveillance system. Every recording system is different, but most are designed in a similar manner and will allow you to adjust settings so cameras record on predetermined times and days. Many systems have pre-set schedules that you can select from, such as 7-Days 24hr Record or Weekend Only Record.

Typically you’ll be able to create custom schedules with more specific details (e.g. Mon – Fri 8am – 6pm). You can also customize settings for each individual camera, allowing for unique scheduling for each one. It’s important to know what type of digital storage your system is using, since this will affect the amount of recordings possible at any given time – some systems can store weeks-worth of recordings while others may only be able to store hours worth of footage before being automatically deleted.

When setting up a recording schedule it’s important to take into consideration motion detection thresholds in order maximize utilization of the available memory and minimize random false alarms that may occur due to wind currents or other forms of movement in the area under surveillance. Configurable motion detection areas are also useful when trying minimize false alarms but allowing accurate recordings when motion is detected in areas desired by the user (such as entryways or specific rooms).

Maintenance

Home surveillance cameras need to be maintained to ensure their effectiveness. It is important to inspect the cables and connections to make sure they are free of dust and dirt. Make sure that the power is plugged in correctly and check the camera’s view to ensure it is not obstructed. Regularly update the software and firmware of the cameras to ensure that they are running smoothly. Additionally, regularly clean the camera lenses and check for any signs of damage.

Regularly check the camera angles

It is important to regularly check the camera angles to ensure they are still providing a clear view of the area being monitored. You may need to adjust or tilt the camera or move it within its mount if it has become misaligned or blocked by foliage or other objects in the surrounding area. Depending on where your cameras are positioned, you may need to make adjustments every few weeks.

It is also wise to periodically inspect your cameras if you notice any type of interference from nearby Wi-Fi networks or electronic devices creating static signals that might interrupt video coverage. This can be especially important for wireless cameras, which should be placed away from sources of static and are typically recommended for indoor use only.

Check the recording device

Before you begin to install your CCTV cameras for home surveillance, you need to make sure that the recording device is suitable for your needs. If the quality of the recording device is too low, it won’t capture all of the footage it needs to and can become interrupted or shut down during long recordings. Make sure that the recording device is compatible with your other hardware, and that it has enough internal hard drive storage to store your videos. It is also important to secure any remote access to the system in order to prevent unwanted intrusions into your data storage.

Clean the lenses of the cameras

It is essential to make sure that the lenses of the CCTV cameras remain clean in order for the surveillance systems to operate effectively. The lenses accumulate dust and dirt over time, which can impede the performance of the device. To avoid this, it is important to regularly clean the lenses by using lens cleaning solution or wipes and a soft lint-free cloth. When cleaning lenses, it is best to start from the centre point and move outward in circular motion until all dust has been removed from both sides. Always use approximately 1-2 drops of lens cleaning solution for each wipe to ensure effective cleaning results. Finally, check for any smudges left on your camera lenses after use and if found, clean again before testing the devices.
