Replacing the battery in a Kwikset door lock is a relatively easy process, but it does require some basic tools. In order to complete the job, you will need a Phillips head screwdriver, a flathead screwdriver and a pair of needle noses pliers. These tools will help you remove the screws and the old battery from the door lock. Let’s get started!
Phillips head screwdriver
In order to replace the battery on a Kwikset door lock, you will need a Phillips head screwdriver. Be sure to use one that is the correct size for the screws in your particular lock model. After obtaining the necessary tools, take the following steps to get the job done quickly and efficiently.
First, insert your flat-head screwdriver into the hole on top of the Kwikset door lock and carefully pry open its casing. Once you’ve opened it up, use your Phillips head screwdriver to remove all of the screws. When that’s done, carefully lift and remove the outer casing of the lock and set it aside so that you can access its interior components.
Next, you’ll need to locate and remove any pieces or components inside that are holding in place a cover over the battery slot holding your old battery in place. Most likely, this will be done using your Phillips head screwdriver as well. After removing this cover, gently pull out your old battery and discard it properly.
Once this has been done, insert a new alkaline AA-size battery into its slot being sure not to reverse polarity – positive side up – before replacing any covers and fastening them securely with your Phillips head screwdriver once again. After fastening all screws back in place, you’re now free to reattach and close up your Kwikset door lock’s outer panel for good!
Flat head screwdriver
A flat head screwdriver is the most important tool needed to complete this job. You will use it to remove the existing battery before replacing it with a new one. Make sure you have the correct size of flat head screwdriver for your model.
Using a standard or Phillips head screwdriver could damage the lock’s casing, making it difficult to properly set the new battery into place. If you are uncertain about what type of tools you need for this job, it is best to consult your user manual or contact the manufacturer for advice before attempting to install replacement batteries.
Removing the Lock
The first step to replacing the battery on your Kwikset door lock is to remove the lock itself. This can be done by first removing the screws or bolts that hold the lock in place, and then carefully pulling the lock away from the door. There may also be a couple of small fixing pins you will need to remove. Be sure to keep track of all of the parts when you are removing the lock.
Unscrew the interior screws
Removing the interior Phillips screws from the back plate is the first step in replacing the battery on a Kwikset door lock. Use a Phillips screwdriver with an appropriate sized bit that fits snugly into each screw hole. Once all of the screws have been removed, take care not to misplace any of them as you may need them for re-attaching the back plate when you’ve installed new batteries. With all of the screws removed, gently pull up and then out on the back plate in order to open up access to the battery compartment underneath.
Remove the interior cover
Now that the latch is removed from the door jamb, it’s time to remove the interior cover of the lock. To do this, start by placing a flat-head screwdriver at the center of the outer edge of the interior cover, pressing inward until it depresses. Once this is done, use your fingers to lightly grip what remains of the edge and slowly pull outward until both sides come free.
Next, you should be able to remove both sides of the interior cover by sliding them off and away in opposite directions. Be sure to set them aside in a safe place. With these steps completed you will have access to the battery compartment within your Kwikset door lock.
Disconnect the battery terminals
Once you have removed the battery plate and the old batteries, take note of the negative and positive terminals on the battery contacts. Make sure your new batteries are connected with the negative sides facing each other as indicated on the battery contacts. Connect both terminals by gripping firmly onto each side of the terminal with a pair of needle-nose pliers and tugging gently to make sure each terminal is securely attached to its respective battery polarity. When you’re finished removing (or connecting) each battery terminal, you can move on to attaching your new batteries.
Installing the New Battery
Replacing the battery in a Kwikset door lock is a relatively easy process that requires basic tools. First, you’ll need to remove the old battery. This can be done by unscrewing the two screws located on either side of the battery compartment with a small screwdriver. Once the screws are removed, you can then carefully slide the battery out of the compartment. Next, you can install the new battery.
Connect the new battery terminals
Once the old battery is removed and the new one is ready to be installed, you’ll need to reconnect the battery terminals. To do this, carefully match up the negative terminal from the new battery with the negative post on the door lock. Then, insert the positive terminal of the new battery into its corresponding post. Now your door lock has a brand new power source! Make sure that all connections are firmly secured before testing.
Replace the interior cover
When you have the new battery in place and connected to the terminals, it’s time to reassemble the lock. Slide the interior cover into place over the interior assembly and be sure to align all screws with their respective slots. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to tighten all four screws before sliding the tab on top of the cover back into its original position.
Screw in the interior screws
Once the backplate of the door lock is removed, you can now begin to install the new battery. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to tighten interior screws and secure the backplate. Depending on your lock model, you may need to use one or two screws to fasten it securely into place. For optimal performance, make sure each screw is firmly secured in place. Be careful not to overtighten the screws as this could cause damage to either the interior of the lock or its functioning mechanism.
Testing the New Battery
Once you have replaced the battery in your Kwikset door lock, you’ll need to test it to make sure it is working correctly. Before you begin, make sure the door is unlocked and the handle is in the neutral position. You can then use your key to unlock the door and see if it works. If the door unlocks, you have successfully replaced the battery in the Kwikset door lock.
Test the lock with a key
After the new battery is installed, it is important to test the lock with a key before closing the battery housing. Start by gently pressing down on the key until you feel a click. If this does not work, try wiggling the key gently from side to side while still pressing down until you hear a loud click. This indicates that the key has triggered the lock’s internal mechanism and successfully opened it. Make sure that any and all keys work with the new battery before proceeding to close the housing door. If there are still difficulties opening the lock, contact an experienced locksmith to help with further troubleshooting.
Test the lock with the code
Now that you have replaced the battery, it’s important to make sure that the Kwikset door lock is still functional and properly working. Before attempting to test out your new Kwikset door lock, make sure that you disconnect the wires from the old battery. To begin the testing process, enter your code into the keypad. If done correctly, you should hear two brief tones and a statement verifying that the code has been accepted.
Then test that you can open and close your Kwikset door with your code. It should be simple to do; just press down on one side of your door handle while pressing down on the other side with a steady force- this is how you will open and close an electronic or mechanical deadbolt or latch. If these steps were done correctly, congrats! You’ve successfully installed a new battery in a Kwikset Door Lock!
Test the lock with the handle
With the new battery in place, you’ll want to test the lock to make sure it is functional. To do this, grab onto the handle of the lock and push or pull as necessary to open and close the door. You may need to use a screwdriver or key if your lock has a handle that needs to be turned in order to operate. If it is still not opening, check your battery again and make sure that it is working properly. If all else fails, contact Kwikset customer service for assistance with troubleshooting.
Once the door is able to be opened and closed using the lock’s handle, you can move on to setting up any programming features that you plan on using with your Kwikset locks. Be sure to refer to your owner’s manual or contact customer service for guidance with setting up these features as some may require additional steps- such as entering codes into a pin pad- before they will work effectively. With that complete, your new battery replacement should be up and running!
